Why is climbing Mount Ararat in May more expensive compared to the summer season tours (June, July, August, and September)?
There are two significant reasons for this. First, in May, winter conditions prevail on Mount Ararat, and unlike in the summer, where equipment is transported between camps by pack animals, during the winter, people handle this task, leading to higher costs for winter tours.
Secondly, during the summer months, from June to October, we utilize a fixed, dedicated campsite, while in the winter, we need to set up temporary camps after each climb, necessitating the transfer of all equipment back to the city. In summary, during May, our staff works under more challenging conditions, which results in higher payments to them compared to the summer tours. These factors influence our tour prices.
Why don’t you use two camping sites for May tours, and why do I see different camping areas in your tours?
Firstly, it’s important to note that the camping sites on Mount Ararat change with the season and weather conditions. We understand that you might not find information about this practice in many other tour companies, and it might be surprising when you read about our tours. To the best of Two Ararat’s knowledge and based on our observations and experience, we prefer a single main camping site at 3,500 meters on Mount Ararat during the first two tours in May. The reason for this choice is particularly adverse weather conditions. Additionally, we offer an extra rest day, which helps you acclimatize better to the environmental conditions and makes your journey from the single camp to the summit much easier.
For our May 2024 tours with a single camp, the schedule is as follows:
- May 6th – 12th
- May 13th – 19th
Two Ararat’s camping sites and climbing seasons are as follows, depending on seasonal conditions:
- Early March through mid-May: Single camp at 3,500 meters.
- Mid-May to early June: Two camps – the first camp at 2,800 meters, and the second camp at 3,800 meters.
- June, July, August, September, and early October: Two private camping sites – the first camp at 3,200 meters, and the second camp at 4,200 meters.
On May 6th and 7th, witness the dazzling “☄️Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower” at our 3,500m Base Camp. This breathtaking celestial display graces our skies every year, spanning from April 19th to May 28th. The peak performance of this cosmic event is scheduled for the night of May 6th and the early hours of May 7th. This year’s show promises to be exceptional, with the presence of a nearly new moon, ensuring a dark, star-studded backdrop for the meteor shower.
These meteors, originating from the Aquarius constellation, will paint streaks of light across the heavens, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that can manifest anywhere in the vast expanse of the night sky.
On May 8th, embrace the celestial magic of the “🌑New Moon” at our 3,500m Base Camp. This night marks the pinnacle of lunar invisibility, offering you the ideal opportunity to marvel at the most delicate celestial wonders, including distant galaxies and intricate star clusters. With the absence of moonlight to disrupt your view, this night promises an unparalleled stargazing experience.
On May 9th, catch a rare celestial event as “🌌Mercury Reaches Greatest Western Elongation” at our 3,500m Base Camp. This presents the prime opportunity to observe Mercury, as it graces the morning sky at its highest point above the horizon.
