MOUNT DAMAVAND SOUTH ROUTE

Mount Damavand is located on Elburuz mountain line, and it’s the highest mountain of Middle East and Iran with its altitude of 5671 meters. It’s a stratovolcanic, active mountain and still releases sulphur gases. Mountain is 80 kilometers away from Tehran. Mount Damavand has symbolical and mythical importance for Iran. And it’s also a clean getaway area for people living in Tehran from the famous pollution of the city. The climb to the mountain is mostly safe and comfortable aside from a long hike. The first known climb in modern times is performed by W.T. Thompson in 1837.

Damavand has a conic structure which provides both and aesthetic look and many routes for climbs. There are 18 known climb routes, but only most active 8 routes are used. TwoArarat prefers the most used classical south route. Mountaineering is a popular and widely performed sport in Iran. That’s why there are mountain cabins built in every route and camp. Our route begins at Polour at 2350 meters. And continues with a transfer to Bargah Sevom at 3050 meters. Then carries on to an old mountain cabin at 4150 meters with a long hike. But right near the area called Doud kuh (misty hill) 300 meters near the summit, there’s a thick sulphur smell. The lack of oxygen in this area makes the climb harder but it’s usually an easy, comfortable climb. After passing this hill, summit itself welcomes you with open arms. The magnificence of the view presented by Mount Damavand is a sight to see. Panoramic view of Elbruz mountain line and its summits are breathtaking. Finally, after summit the route will be finished by following the same road.
